In the 1970s,Wing was leading candidate for the third London airport but after representation and objections, Stansted was finally chosen.

Was down in the area before the crisis looking at airfields in Southern Oxfordshire so might have the opportunity on my next visit when visiting relatives.

Thanks, Harry, From Wing Village, you'll need the Cublington road, Just about a Mile, maybe less, there is a turning on your right-side. Acorn Business Estate. A long-straight track in-front of you, go along there, Lancaster Park, on the right, just before the memorial. Postcode for the Acorn Estate is LU7 0LB. Nothing Airfield related on the Wing Village sign, when it's there ? But Cublington Village sign has a small, wood-carved outline of a 747 ? though it looks slightly damaged ?

    L.F Thanks for the information

Yes I remember RAF Wing also being referred to as Cublington on the temporary hoardings along the A1 objecting to the choice of the location as the third London airport. It was a feature seen of travelling down to London by car in those days. (I always find it interesting how the Air Ministry determined the names of its stations.)

At one time where there was a village with the same name as the RAF station, the practice was that the village would signposted as in the case of Hemswell in West Lindsey as Hemswell (Village only ) which is located at the bottom of the Lincolnshire Ridge to differentiate with the location of the RAF station which was located on the Lincolnshire Ridge. The village sign has only recently been removed. The practice of signposting RAF stations would have only been established postwar.
