From CWGC Good morning Clive I attach a Cemetery map and have circled the grave site for JD Constable(but from the sound of your enquiry you have already had this?) On looking on our data base it states that the grave is unmarked as relative refused a headstone, but the Grave number is 96922 it is of level turf two back and 6 right of CH to Carter. CONSTABLE, JAMES DUNCAN Rank: Second Engineer Officer Trade: Offr. Date of Death: 21/07/1944 Age: 40 Regiment/Service: Merchant Navy S.S. Empire Pride (Glasgow). Grave Reference Div. A. Grave 2292. Cemetery NORTHAMPTON (DALLINGTON) CEMETERY Additional Information: Son of John Lewis Constable and Margaret Constable; husband of May Jeane Constable, of St. James' End, Northampton. M.I.MAR.E., A.M.I.MECH. E. M.I.F.
If the next of kin did not want a headstone memorial their wishes should be respected. Nevertheless, he is still commemorated by the CWGC. Does anyone know of the cause of death?
Further information received from CWGC Good morning Clive I have some further information on this grave site for JD Constable. We have correspondence that states that the widow of JD Constable declined the offer of a Commission Headstone on a number of occasions. We also have correspondence regarding erecting a memorial headstone to which the Council had no objections. No other correspondence follows. We are at present following up on 58 Relative Refused cases and hopefully we can eventually commemorate JD Constable. Kind regards

Kind regards Wonder if they could get round it by erecting a "buried somewhere in this cemetery" headstone elsewhere in the cemetery. This way, it won't be on the actual grave and respecting the wishes of the family.
Hello Rob yes that is what they are aiming to do There is a small WW2 plot with the other WW2 scattered and my suggestion is that they place it near the WW2 plot which is at least 200 yards from the original grave plot regards Clive

From CWGC Thank you for your email. We would explain that as Second Engineer Officer J D Constable is buried in a private grave, we would need his family's permission to install a headstone. His family have refused the offer of a Commission headstone twice, so we have accepted their wishes and the grave will remain unmarked. We hope you find this information useful. Kind regards CWGC Enquiries Team
