Noel Coward was a secret message courier.

  1. After reading 'A man called Intrepid' it was revealed that the 'Baker Street Club' used Noel Coward to carry secret messages to agents. Whilst the Germans followed what Bill Donovan was doing, (the Baker Street Club used him as a decoy.) they left Noel Coward alone because they thought him an idiot.

Moral of the story - The best spies are the ones that don't look like spies.

I've recently read a lot of WWII books lately. Some of them too controversial to be discussed. Discussing one of them has resulted on me being banned on another site.

A Man Called Intrepid is fascinating - it's the story of Bill Stevenson who ran the Baker Street Club who handled secret agents and secret warfare activities in WWII. The name Intrepid was given to Stevenson, a Canadian, by Winston Churchill.

The fake document that the Baker Street Club produced which convinced Hitler to declare war on America four days after Pearl Harbor is something which made me a little uneasy. Had Roosevelt declared war on Germany he would never had got it through Congress. However Hitler viewed America as already at war with Germany (thanks largely to Baker Street Club disinformation) the document faked by the Baker Street Club found its way to Hitler and it tipped him over the edge and he did the deed for Roosevelt. This particular part comes under the chapter title 'Impeachable Offenses' - had the American public known what Roosevelt was up to he would have been impeached.

Stevenson's group was called “The Baker Street Irregulars,” after the amateurs who aided Sherlock Holmes. Like the methods of the great detective, their approach was unorthodox.

e.g. Like the girl with the cover name CYNTHIA who made love naked in the foyer of the Vichy France building in New York as a distraction whilst a cracker was opening a safe to steal and photograph the Enigma codes they were using.
