Old Palace Primary School ,Fireman Memorial,St Leonard's Street,Bromley by Bow,London In memory of the 13 London firemen and women and 21 Beckenham firemen killed on the night of 19th April 1941 when a bomb destroyed the old school being used as a sub-fire station. This is the largest single loss of Fire Brigade personnel in English history. Details of this tragic incident were recorded in the wartime diaries of Mr W. Somerville, an off duty member of the Homerton crew. It is to him and the many thousands of men and women that made up the A.F.S & N.F.S 1939 - 1945 that this plaque is also dedicated.
I did some research into this tragic event because my great Aunt was sadly one of those that lost her life that night. This needed up becoming a large piece of research and with the help of some friends, I have pieced together an account of what happened and have written the story here. The Old Palace School WW2 Bombing Part 2
Thanks for the anniversary reminder, I have written 15 biographies so far, for the 34 firefighters that died that night, they full list can be found on my website. Old Palace School Bombing
