Operation Varsity - 52nd Troop Carrier Wing, 315th TC Group - Report

    Have just looked up the report for 315th Troop Carrier Group who flew serial B-6 for Varsity for one of the group members and emailed it to him... thought perhaps the rest of you may appreciate my summary of the report for this serial.

    Report summary for 315th TC Group flew Serial B-6 (Flying from RAF Boreham in Essex):

    • Carried units of 7th and 12th Btns British Airborne.
    • Total troops carried 620, total dropped 619... 1 man injured and returned to base in the aircraft.
    • 36 Aircraft involved in the Serial of which 4 did not return. 1 Aircraft was abandoned in the air near Xanten, 1 crash landed at Weeze. All others made it to the DZ. 19 aircraft were damaged but returned to base.
    • Aircraft were C-47A and C-47B.
    • Troops were dropped from an altitude of between 700 and 800ft and at a speed of between 100 and 110 MPH. Take off was 0740, Time over DZ was 1013.
    • Anti-Aircraft Fire reported as "Accurate and Intense".
    • 1 Member of TC Group listed as KIA

    My father dropped with 7 para on Op Varsity so your item was of special interest.

    Unfortunately the Varsity report for 52nd Troop Carrier Wing is heavily summarised, unlike the report for Operation Market which records the fate of each glider by chalk number.
