Remembering today, Holocaust Memorial Day, Otto Urbach, a Polish jew who disappeared in the horror of Auschwitz. Otto and his Austrian wife Etelka fled Austria in the late 1930s to try to reach the UK. Etelka was subsequently allowed to enter the UK to work as a domestic servant as there was a significant shortage of such staff at this time; Otto had to remain in Brussels where he was subsequently rounded up and transported to Auschwitz. By what mechanism I know not, Etelka was employed as a cook in the house I would buy in 1997; she emigrated to the USA in 1948. Tonight I will light a candle in memory of Otto.
