Is it possible to see what my Grandad's rank would have been at the time this photo was taken please?

    Thanks very much.

    Jules.

    Hi,

Yes he was an officer - an NCO in Iraq and commissioned in Egypt. I was trying to work out where this photo was taken and hoped that something might have given away his rank.

Just as an after thought, as he was in RAOC and REME whilst in Iraq, can you tell anything from the cap badge?

    Thanks again.

    Jules.

R.E.M.E. If you zoom in on the picture up of your grandfather you can see the shape of the old style REME cap badge - You can see the four points of the letters R.E,M.E. Set around a pair of calipers

Thank Wills! I saw an X and couldn't see beyond it.

So, as it's when he was REME, it's still not clear which country it is. Dusty, sandy locations aren't the easiest to identify are they?!

    Thanks again.

    Jules.

Defo Officer but doesn't appear to have any rank on his shoulders.

One 'quick' way to find out when he was commisisoned will be to look in the Army Lists for the period......this will give the rough time whne he was commissioned...but I see you are in Germany and two places that do have copies are the Imperial War Museum and the National Archives......also as an officer if you know his unit he may well be mentioned in their war diary.....

Jules - As a matter of interest, are we allowed to know the name of your GF?

It might make looking info up about him somewhat easier.

    cheers

Airborne and Dave - Thanks very much for the advice about where to find out about my Grandad's commission, but I do have this information already. My thought was that, if someone here could have picked out something about his rank from this photo, I would have been able to work out the location and also have a good idea which workshops these were.

Thanks too Andy for taking a look.

    Jules.
