Visited the memorial on the way back from Normandy recently, very impressive and sobering at the same time. A fellow traveller on the coach tour wanted to stop by as his father is named on one of the plaques.

Yes it is very sobering to see this memorial. I have a 2nd cousin who died on H.M.S. Queen Mary at the Battle of Jutland during WW1. The cd i have shows all names that are on the memorial, its took quite a long time to do this. Next time i'm heading to The Runnymede Memorial to get all the names on there. Once it is done anyone can ask me for a photo of a particular casualty on the memorial and i'll be happy to give it to them. I also have quite a few from France and Canada.
    Regards
    Mike

    Hi Mike
Do you have the WW1 and 2 sections as I have quite a few you may be able to help me with as I was planning a visit there to picture them in the next few weeks but can head off to different pastures if you can assist??

    Cheers
    Steve

Marvellous site on Pompey's memorials: Memorials and Monuments in Portsmouth, UK, there's even more than I thought there was... and I always thought there were loads.
The density of plaques, statuary, etc. around the seafront & Old Portsmouth is pleasingly mad.

Best thing they ever did with the Memorial on Southsea Common (I presume you mean that one), other than cleaning it up after years of looking terrible was finally getting around to regularly floodlighting it. It now looks particularly striking from the sea.
What always strikes me on the bigger Naval memorials is the long lists of Stoker.

Yes Von i do mean the memorial on Southsea Common. I have a close up of all the names on that memorial so should anyone wish for a particular name just post it here with panel and column numbers and i'll be happy to put the photo up for your records. I also have a large number of cemeteries done in France, Germany, Canada and the U/K so if anyone lets me know what cemetery they are after i'll see if i have it among my collection.

The Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea common is undergoing some major building works at the moment, its covered in scaffolding and hoarding so it's not possible to get closed to it, I was down in Portsmouth on Tuesday and noted the work being undertaken but don't know when it will be completed.
