    February 22nd, 1944 will forever remain a dark day in Gelderland's history. The day of the devastating American bombardment of Nijmegen that killed more than 800 people. That same day Arnhem, Deventer and Enschede were also targeted by the Americans who, after the cancellation of their mission to Gotha, Germany - the weather was too bad - went in search of opportunity targets.

    The consequences were disastrous: 40 people were killed and 41 seriously injured in Enschede. Only one fatality fell in the Deventer-Terwolde corner when a farm was hit. At Arnhem the Rijnwijk, Malburgen, Het Broek industrial estate, the railway yard and houses in the area were affected. 86 homes were destroyed and 464 families were affected; 57 civilians perished.
