More Great War than WW2? Still a great song...
Not quite in the same class as Roger Waters' song-writing. The Prodigy:Spitfire Lyrics - LyricWiki - Music lyrics from songs and albums
Mark Knopfler, Piper To The End (about his uncle?) Soldier, The Groundhogs (Excellent band!) The Doors, Love Me Two Times (about a guy about to go to 'Nam) Hendrix, Izabella (ditto)
More Great War than WW2? Still a great song... Great song, I had the pleasure of knowing Pete Hooton the lead singer quite well in the late 80's
Unusual one (not exactly rock, but a good often underated guitar player. Much better when he's string bending on his turquoise Stratocaster) Richard Thompson, Al Bowlly’s in Heaven. The song is about a WW2 war hero returning home to nothing. Hence title reference to Al Bowlly, killed in an air raid in1941. I must have been there in the audience, but I don't remember it. The recording is quite bad and it would sound much better if you were there. Danny Thompson on upright bass. YouTube - Richard Thompson Band - Al Bowlly's In Heaven
This is more like it! YouTube - Richard Thompson - Put It There Pal nothing to do with WW2... Pretty darn good from 4:25 onwards for a 'folkie'
Nice one, and there must be loads more Country ones. YouTube - Jimmy Dean: P.T. 109 (1962) Johnny Cash - Ira Hayes Geoff, I've a sort of ingrained resistance to Thompson - I quite like his stuff with the ex-missus, bright lights etc., but never warmed to much of the rest, despite many mates being major fans.
Geoff, I've a sort of ingrained resistance to Thompson - I quite like his stuff with the ex-missus, bright lights etc., but never warmed to much of the rest, despite many mates being major fans. I know exactly what you mean. Can never play his stuff now, but he is good live when his guitar is plugged in. Mirror Blue probably worked best for me. Probably did not help flying back from Oz, with his cassette stuck in the player. Slight brain damage. No MP3s then
