Hello all, I have recently been doing some research on my grandfather's service in WW2. Here is what I know for sure: 1. He was a part of the 87th Infantry Division, 345th Infantry Regiment. 2. His MOS per his discharge papers is "Cannoneer 610." I have found through various online sources that 610 is anti-tank gun crewman. I found a PDF online detailing the history of the unit in Europe. It has him listed under the regimental headquarters company. Not sure how trustworthy this document is though, as it has barely anyone listed for the anti-tank company, which I would expect to be much larger. I'm wondering if this is accurate? Could an anti-tank gun crewman be attached to an HQ company? If not, what are some resources I could use to potentially find what company/unit he was actually attached to? Thanks.
Stoggle, I am not sure what pdf you have, but have you read the 87th Divisional history? Its available on line at: Division History Book - 87th Infantry Division Legacy Association It was written close to the end of the war by the men who were there. Without checking it, many of these contemporary histories often contained lists of their troops.
The 345th Infantry disbanded its Cannon Company on or about 3 February 1945, which is why he appears with HQ Company. The Antitank Company personnel were reorganized as mine and bazooka teams and attached to the Regimental and Battalion HQ companies and the 57mm antitank guns were turned into Ordnance depots.
