Hi I am researching a WW2 soldier who has confirmed service in the Raiding Support Regiment - Could I ask if the war diaries exist for this unit anywhere?. He has been presented the Greek War Medal 1941 - 1945 (confirmed with certificate and letter from Greek Defence Attache) as well for service in that theatre. The chaps name in question is 5498774 Sgt Arthur Augustus Middleton, his Territorial Efficiency medal is numbered to him and annotates him being in the Hampshire Regiment. His service with RSR is confirmed on WW2 service records and mentions an Army Air Corps link? I dont really know where to start with this unit so any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi

I have looked at my list of RSR in Greece and haven't found Sgt Middleton anywhere.

Given his Greek War Medal award, I will add him to it, thanks.

Happy to let you see the RSR diaries I have.

You are better off starting a conversation with Dorset_Man as with only 3 posts he hasn't got enough posts to start a PM yet.

Just found this in IWM collection

    Collection: WATKINS NEIL (MR)

Sadly image not digitised yet, but text says

Modern black and white copy print of Raiding Support Regiment personnel in Athens, during December 1944 featuring members of D Battery. Identified members in the photograph show Sergeant Gilmore, Sergeant Bob Downie and Sergeant Jack Middleton amongst the others. One other un-named member is identified as a Jewish-German who joined the unit to work as Interrogator and Translator.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Gus that’s interesting, shame the middleton chap is called Jack but who knows. Thanks for sending me the war diaries, are they complete or is worth visiting Kew myself?

Looking for information on my grandad who I thought he was in the sas in ww2 Italy but after posting info from his soldiers pay book on line have been told he was in the raiding support regiment. Thanks Chris

    Welcome.

There's a potted history in the post here: RSR - Gallantry Medals - Greece 1944/45

Numerous other threads on the forum too, and for me, the font of all knowledge on RSR on the forum is member "gmyles" (Gus). If you post up some further details (only if you wish to of course) Gus will at least be able to let you know if he has any information on your grandad.

Good luck with all, kind regards, always,

    Jim.

    Hi Chris

Sadly i have not been able to find your relative amongst my lists of RSR personnel in Greece.

He may have been in the RSR Italy or Yugoslavia.

    You might get lucky here

The Raiding Support Regiment – Raiding Forces 1943-1945

If you do not already have his service records I would recommend you apply for them.

    Hope this helps

  11. Hi Gus,
Thanks for replying so quickly and looking for me it's much appreciated. He was in Italy as I have a picture of him at the time in Rome and he also told us he was there. I've applied for his records from KEW and am waiting for it. He told me some stories of the things he done and now I'm older I regret not writing notes and asking more. I've been looking into the RSR over the last 3 months and have read everything I can find online about them along with Walter Jones book and I managed to get a copy of 'i was part of noahs ark'.

    Thanks Chris
