Is it possible to have a sub-forum titled: RAOC/REME in Unit History, War Diaries, and Documents please? I am researching my fathers and uncles war service and they served in these corps. Thanks.
Is it possible to have a sub-forum titled: RAOC/REME in Unit History, War Diaries, and Documents please? It all depends on whether there is enough input from members on this subject. We didn't set out to have sub-forums for all British units, it's just certain ones attracted so much interest & input from many members with connections to those units, they just evolved.
Great idea. Trying to find if LAD's kept their own war diaries.? Cheers,Ken. Yeah, doesn't look like they did though? will send dads service papers to reme museum, they say they can give a "potted history" of him while with reme, will see what happens.
No help, their suggestion 'try National Archives'. I am attempting to locate the war diaries for 1st.Northamptonshie Yeomanry, REME LAD, where my father served. I have his notes of dates and places from Le-hamel beach until the Rhine crossing and, myself, have followed this complete trail the last couple of years.Contacting and meeting some of the the veterans of 1st.N.Y. was very helpful. If you can find out your fathers parent regiment etc, then more info could be found of his service. Cheers, Ken
He originally joined 121 field regiment royal artillery (territorials) in April 1939, was transferred to RAOC in Feb.1941 then became REME in 0ct 1942.
P.S. I have his service papers, but while he was in RAOC/REME and not with a LAD his papers just say: 58 section and 3 workshop coy. etc, so don't have full details of his service, was hoping REME records could help, but you say not?

The Archivists at the REME museum are very helpful, but they do not hold all the unit histories. Have you found any reference yet for either 58 Section or 3 workshop coy on TNA website? I have been searching for 5 Advanced Base Workshops war diary for 1943 - haven't found anything yet, but found numerous references to it in the 1 Advanced Base Workshop 1943 war diary! - including something that was relevant to my research. I think your idea for RAOC/REME section is a good one. The information for both seem to be limited - being left out of ORBAT's etc. Jules.

Lets get together and pool our info for these corps. do u have "craftsmen of the army" book about raoc/reme. 5 advanced base workshop is mentioned twice although very short mentions, not much info, could look it up if u wish or scan the 2 pages in question.

Thanks for the offer of a look up - I do have 'Craftsmen of the army' though and also have an RAOC regimental history. If you don't, I would be more than happy to look for anything there for you. What dates and units are you looking for? I thought that "sections" used by the RAOC were mostly pre-war ie section 12 was for Egypt, although section 51 was a training section home forces during the war. What date do you have for section 58? Jules.
would be interested in: 56 section 1-5-41 UK 68 section 17-5-41 UK 3.w/s coy 29-5-41 UK-ME 533 bw ?-2-43 ME 539 w/s coy 21-4-43 ME and... italy? 708 wksp/coy 1-7-44 until 2-11-45 ME and... italy? what regimental history do u have and are there more? wehre did u get info section 12 was egypt etc? would love to know more, thanks, steve
Hi Steve, Just checking - earlier you wrote 58 section is that wrong? As have found this: WO 166/5369 ROYAL ARMY ORDNANCE CORPS: SECTIONS: 58 Training Section. I think the sections thing came from ancestry. I did a free trial and then went through all the military listings. These were from a list dated latest 1931 No 1 Section - Aldershot No 2 Section - Tidworth No 3 Section - Bovington No 4 Section - Didcot No 5 Section - Bramley, Hants No 6 Section - Chatham No 7 Section - Dover No 8 Section - Colchester No 9 Section - Catterick No 10 Section - Burscough No 11 Section - Stirling No 12 Section - Egypt Depot - Hilsea *Edit: During 1920-1922, the Irish Depot at Carrickfergus Castle became a detachment of No.10 Section, Burscough, but with it's own DADOS and IOM. (Source RAOC Regimental History, pages 24 & 25). I am also looking for info on 533 Base Workshop for August 1943 onwards and 20 Workshop Coy. Have you any info for this one other than Craftsmen? Who are you researching? Jules.
Sorry thats 56 and 68 section, confused! will post more accurate details shortly. no info except craftsman of the army. I am researching my Fathers record (1939-46, RA, RAOC, REME) and his brother (RAOC 1939-42), who died in 1942 (buried Aldershot), will post Fathers record on here when i have chance to scan into computer. Will be at work on shift next couple of days so may not be back till Wed. Going back to my OP I think RAOC/REME should have its own sub-section as its small things like we can contribute that makes up the whole, don' t u think? there must be 1000s of men in these corps and people trying to research them must be frustrated that nothing re: them is online.
Info:- No 10 Section- Burscough - was COD Burscough- closed in the 80's In the same complex was 21.Command Wk/sp. REME - closed in 1960. Stationed in workshops 1954 on - happy days!!
