Hi, I am trying to research my grandfathers military details, I have sent away for them but there seems to be a very long delay at the minute. I know he was in the RASC in Tunisia in 1943, he then went on to Italy. In 1944-5 he was in Norway. My question is he was in the RASC but he had a cap badge and blazer badges for the Northamptonshire regiment, I've tried to research but get more confused as from the research I've done the Northamptonshire regiment is an infantry unit but he was RASC. Would the RASC been part of the Northamptonshire regiment or would he of transferred to them. All the documents I have put him in the RASC but never mention the Northamptonshire Regiment. Although I know he was based in Peterborough at some point which was where the Northamptonshire Reg was. Any help much appreciated.

Do the documents you do have give any clue as to which company in the RASC he was in?

He did live in Essex when the war started. But l know at some point he was in Northamptonshire as that's where he met his wife and stayed after the war.

Yes, its easy to jump to conclusions when you have little information to work with. Hopefully the fog will start to clear when you get his records.

My dad started out in a Dorset regiment, was moved twice because both regiments were sent abroad when he was still an "immature" (too young) and ended up in the 59th (The Essex Regt) HAA. He married an Essex girl and moved in with wife & mother-in-law in the Essex town of Benfleet.

I always assumed he had met my mum in Essex, but now it seems more likely that they met in Bristol ...why didn't I ask more questions when mum & dad were still alive???

    Good luck with your research.

From his number I'd say he joined the Essex Regiment in late May 1940.

I also see he is on a couple of casualty lists for Tunisia - first reporting him wounded then correcting to "not a battle casualty" - at that point he was RASC, the T in front of his number would have been added when he transferred to the RASC to indicate he was with the Transport branch

Thank you I wondered if the T indicated something. I know when he was in Norway the T was replaced with an S which looking online earlier I think is supplies.
