I am helping with the interpretation of the service records for a lad who enlisted into the RASC on 6th April, 1937. He was 17 years old but it seems that he ‘advanced’ his age by 12 months to be 18 years and 1 month on enlistment. We have managed to work out most of his postings and see that there are some War Diaries at Kew which cover his overseas service (will visit as soon as we can) but we are struggling to find out information regarding his periods of Home postings.

On 8 April, two days after his enlistment, he is with 1 Training Coy in Aldershot and was approved as a driver 4 days later.

His initial training appears to have lasted 4 months and then he was posted to a Driving School for approx 12 weeks before being posted to 21 Coy followed by 57 Coy, then returning to 21 Coy - I believe that both 21 & 57 were in Colchester.

Is it possible to determine from his service records which Driving School he was posted on 17.8.37. - would it have been Feltham or somewhere closer to Colchester?

I’ve not been able to find any information about 21 and 57 Coy’s - were they both training units?

I’ve attached a section of his service record as I have one more question; under the heading of "Trade Tests, etc.”, then “Particulars” (on the righthand side of the page) does it read A.Q. Driver 1.C.? If so, what does this mean?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Not sure about AQ, it might mean Army Qualified/Qualification but Driver IC = Driver Internal Combustion ie motorised vehicles as opposed to horses/mules.
