Hi there, There are lots of posts about service abbreviations (online and in this forum) and I've search many of them, but I am still stumped at one that appears on my great-uncle's Record of Service. All of the abbreviations below, except one, are included in the List of Facilities of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) in Canada. List of British Commonwealth Air Training Plan facilities in Canada - Wikipedia For example, 5 MD, Lachine = RCAF Station Lachine 5 Manning Depot and, 1 AGGTS, Quebec = Air Gunners Ground Training School However, I can't make out the abbreviation highlighted in yellow, specifically: 9 PAE, Montreal He was there for 3 weeks, between Wireless School and Air Gunners Ground Training School. I think I have deciphered the letters correctly. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
There is this, which has no exact match: Common Abbreviations on WW2 RAF Records (O P Q) The nearest is: An ostensibly RCAF site shows: From: FFYL - WW2 RCAF & RAF Acronyms, Abbreviations & Slang This looks more officially Canadian: http://cmhs.ca/PDFs/CMHS_MilitaryAbbreviations.pdf Still no trace. 9 PAE appears in this Chinese-Canadian's record: Chinese Canadians WWII The answer appears to come from the USAF post-war: From: https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/docum...&doi=4c4aff62b7ff29dc6c311ecd1971297e036688a8
Davidbfpo, Thank you for finding the reference in the Chinese-Canadian record. At least I know I've deciphered the number and letters correctly. Kam Len Douglas Sam had pretty much the same training itinerary as my great uncle, he was just 2 months ahead of my great uncle. I am not sure about the Physical Aptitude Exam... The PAE is listed as a detachment and both Kam Len Douglas Sam and my great uncle were there for 3 weeks time. All the other training locations are schools (aside from the initial Manning Depot), so I am curious that this is described as a "detachment". I do note that one of the abbreviations on my g. uncles service record does say 9 PAED, the other says 9 PAE. [the link after the Physical Aptitude Exam you provided does not work, comes back with Internal Server Error] I'll keep searching, but am happy to know that I am on the right path. Thanks so much for helping!
Searching PAED seems to be the trick. Pre-Aircrew Education Detachment, educational upgrading for otherwise suitable recruits. Seem mostly associated with Universities, so possibly McGill in your case. Useful thread here: PAED Montreal - 1943 Mention of 23 PAE at U of T here: In Memoriam - Those Air Force Pilots/Crews who died on this day in WW2. Edit: Roberto types faster
Ta da! We have an answer. Thank you both Roberto and Kevin. I appreciate the links to other threads and the one to LAC. Thank you thank you! Kristine
