Hello, I am a new member but I live in Reeth close to the Burgoyne Hotel as it is now known. You may already know that on Rememberence Sunday this year -(2010) at 14:00 a memorial plaque was unveiled by a lovely chap who I think was called Jack who had been brought in from Hartlepool possibly (East Coast anyway). He was a former trainee at the unit and he is one of the few remaining members who passed through the course. If you wish I could find out more and get an image of the plaque. Ian
Ian, Hello and welcome to the forum. All information on the Plaque would be appreciated. It would also be nice to find out more about "Jack", such as which Recce Regt he served. Regards Tom
Ian, welcome to the forum, any more information on the plaque and Jack would be most welcome. Cheers paul
I remember my Dad, now deceased taking us, his family around Reeth and recalling his days there in the Recce. Good to see there is a plaque now, as there didn't seem much to find out about the Recce some 45 years ago when we visited. He did mention someone in charge who was clearly fearless, which I realise must have been the major. He also told us about crossing the Swale and on one of the training exercises after gaining the top of a high hill someone let his rifle slide to the bottom. He then had to go and collect it! God bless them all. Regards Barry
Barry welcome to the forum. Great to have another Recce on board. Would you like to share information about your father's time with Recce? Cheers Paul
Barry, Hello and welcome to the Forum. There are quite a few members on the Forum with Recce Connections and if you search, you will find a lot of interesting posts. Regards Tom
I passed through Reeth yesterday and spotted the plaque, it's just to the right of the gateway. RECCE BATTLE SCHOOL, REETH. WWII ONLY THE ENEMY IN FRONT Reeth Parish Council erected this plaque to commemorate, with thanks, the members of the Reconnaisance Regt, who trained in this area and were billeted at Hill House, Cambridge House, The Woodyard, Congregational & Methodist schoolrooms. Also to members of the RASC & RAMC who came after Dunkirk and trained in the vicinity. ALL GAVE, SOME GAVE ALL
As current owners of Cambridge House, Reeth, does anyone remember the house on Arkengarthdale Rd which was used as the officer's mess and where the beagles lived? We have been told that Major Parry lived here. It is very interesting reading about Reeth and the life of the Recces in Reethin WW2.
Cambridge House 15, Hello and welcome to the forum. I have never come across anything written about the house, but I bet if walls could talk, they would have many a tale to tell. Regards Tom
