This is my first attempt at uploading photos so I hope it works.

These were sent to me some time back and I thought that they may be of some interest to someone.

Well it seemed to work OK.

    Cheers

    Owen,

These were sent to me quite sometime back. I will need to check any additional info that was sent with them. So I will check and come back on that. Mind you I was tempted to put ? after the 43rd.

    Roddy,

I can't see a T number on the carrier although it does carry the name SNIPE and the LRC's are KESTREL and BUZZARD.

Are they really 43 recce, can't see a wyvern anywhere & why no '41' sign but '138' instead?
As for uploading pics Roddy, see here.

    Owen,

This is a follow up to the above posts and photos and to try to fill in a bit more detail.

The photos were sent to me 3 years ago by Patrick Keenan, who has a website called Warwheels ( listed in r/h col on home page ). They were originally from a gentleman called Tony Ponsford who was trying to find out about his Father's wartime life and service.
These are extracts from emails to me from Mr Ponsford.

My understanding is that the Recce Corps was not put together until the beginning of 1941. My father’s service record shows that he was posted to the Guards Recce (24th) on 22nd January 1941 so he was there right at the start. Because of this I wonder if this photo roll shows a Troop in the very early days, before all of the Recce numbering was regularized.

I have another photo roll of a full Squadron with the same uniforms, clearly taken at the same time. It shows pine trees behind the serried ranks – pine trees may well fit in with Pirbright, but I am guessing!

His War Service record and confirms that he transferred from the Grenadiers to the Reconnaisance Corps 22.1.41, posted to the 24th Ind. Coy.

His Service and Casualty form, however, states “Trans to Super List (H. R. 24th Guards Bde Recce)” on 9.2.41 and then “43rd Recce – Joined – Home Forces – 18.7.42

Sgt W E Ponsford is buried in the War Grave at Brunsumm in Holland.

I have a "negative" photo of the carriers and the marking on the mg visor appears to be either an angled bird of pray or an antlered deer similar to that used by 22nd Armoured Brigade.

I hope this helps a little more.

    Cheers
    Kevin

The AoS marking would seem to be in the region of those issued to independent brigades. These Home Front markings are not well documented.

I'd have guessed that the photo dates from the winter of '41/'42. I'd be surprised with the DR boots if it was as early as '40/'41.

The bikes (a BSA M20 in the first picture and Norton 16H in the second) have proper black out masks but no panniers which would fit with this time frame.

I thought the wearing of Service dress caps looked rather Guards like but didn't want to say yesterday as was worried I'd sound daft.

pS I've edited the thread title slighty.

    Thanks Lesley,

I have some other WWII photos I need to sort. But I do have a few of my late Father from when he was in Malaya / Hong Kong in the early 50's and today I found the program from 1975 of National Artillery Association Presentation when he was WOII ( BSM) of 210 ( Staffordshire ) Light Air Defence.
A shame they are post war or I would post them.

    Cheers

I see Roddy has answered my query regards the 138 number in this thread.
Independent Recce Company of an Independent Infantry Brigade/Ind Bde Group.

The large group photo of B Squadron, has on the 3rd row from the L to R Sgts Thurston, Debnam, ? , Storey, Jones, Scruthers. who are in the photo i've just posted. Also Sgt Pickford (from another thread) is in both.
