Royal Marines and Paras may face merger in controversial military shake-up | Mail Online

"The Royal Marines could be merged with the Paras to form a new expeditionary brigade under a controversial military shake-up.
The ‘nuclear’ option of creating a new expeditionary brigade is being considered as military chiefs try to make budget cuts of up to 20 per cent.
Merging two such fiercely independent, illustrious and highly decorated fighting units is likely to cause resentment......"

A shocking shame if the two elite units lost their identities

They can't really, can they? One is RN and the other is Army. Second thoughts the SBS and SAS are as close as they have ever been - They may even stop fighting each other one day

They could have a flying anchor as a cap badge :D

    Why not?
Most Bootnecks got jump wings anyway.
In the Falklands the paras were on landing craft.
While we're at it, merge all the Guards regiments.

Sad for the Royal Marines, but the Army Commandos did start it all...

Slightly more seriously, I always thought that the Paras should have taken up the role of the Special Forces Support Group (or whatever Blair's Rangers were supposed to be) reducing to a single battalion. Giving the RM the expeditionary role strikes me as being the more sensible option if they are more likely to float than fly somewhere.

And doesn't anyone want the RAF Regiment????

Well if they can merge the 16/5th Lancers with the 17/21st Lancers and call them the Queens Royal Lancers - they can do anything they want - and most likely will.....
    Cheers

Never mind the buttons, I wouldn't like to be Orderly Sgt in the NAAFI bar if they merged!

Also talk of merging RAF and Army. Last one to leave Northolt has been asked to turn off the lights.

The Fleet Air Arm and the RAF are already training and stationed together, so why not join all the elite forces up into one big unit

What colour would the Beret be

Another case of one size fits everything. We seem to be heading towards an Armed Force ( singular ) that does everything but in a mediocre fashion. That would fit in well with todays way of political thinking.

This slanted drivel was brought to you by the reliable Mail online.

The Think tank may have suggested that units from the RM and Paras are grouped in a Expeditionary Bde. That is far from merging the parent units.

We have done the same in Norway from time to time. Bar the broken teeth and bloody floors, it has been a success.

Don't forget the FAA only came into being a few years before WWII when the RAF lost the resposibility for shipboard aircrew that it had from the abolition of the RNAS ;) And until the Sea Harrier came into being with a vengence over the Flaklands, the only thing keeping it going for some years were its rotary aircraft.

It's a ghost of its former self...and is a relatively shortlived self anyway. Given the few aircraft it has - merge it BACK into the RAF.

blacksnake As old as I feel.

Two "Special Forces" Units... With VERY different "Special Forces" skills and attributes... Combined under one cap badge... I should Co-Co!

But, I suppose.... If they can combine the Liverpool King's Regiment (Scouse) and the Queen's Lancashire Regiment (Mancs) and call it the Duke of Lancaster's Reg (King's, Lancashire & Border's) without triggering a mass 'coup-de-grace' within the ranks, then anything is possible! :D

Any "Tale" in the "Mail", is worth verifying in a proper newspaper! A bit like Channel 5 News???? Tune to the BBC to see if it's true!:)

We could call it the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F) or would that just be one name too far??

Lets just say that I'm not entirely suprised. But all that history...

Brigadier Allan Mallinson told the paper: 'It was by the epic march of the Coldstreamers from Tweed to Thames in the winter of 1660 that Charles 11 was restored to the the throne and the British Army was founded.
'It would be an act of unconscionable vandalism to disband the Second regiment of Footguards.'
