PRUGIHINUA Rank: Private Date of Death: Between 03/09/1939 and 31/12/1947 Regiment/Service: Solomon Islands Labour Corps Panel Reference Panel 11. Memorial BOURAIL MEMORIAL CWGC - Cemetery Details
I had never heard of that unit before seeing this mention - odd that his date of death is just given as sometime during the mandated period of WW2 as per CWGC guidelines. I can only presume that he left his community to go enlist and as he didn't return then his name was added to this memorial to the missing. The Corps itself only came into being in November 1942 so that should narrow things down a bit....... After the American invasion of Guadalcanal the British established the Solomon Islands Labour Corps in November 1942 and began recruiting Islanders to build airfields and roads, load and unload supplies and materiel from ships, and clear fields to set up camps. The majority of Islanders involved in the war actually served in the Labour Corps, About 3,200 men signed on with the Solomon Islands Labour Corps and went to work on Guadalcanal, Gela, Russell Islands and New Georgia
A previous thread covers this unit, who lost 133 personnel during the war http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/general/30447-guadalcanal-british-protectorate-3.html
