    I've read that section about the portees and I'm just aghast. It's kind of like British tankers continuing to cling to "release the tanks" in spite of the repeated failure of that policy.

    I don't know how well emplaced 2-pounder guns actually worked, but firing from portee made them horribly vulnerable to enemy fire.
