I am writing up the story of a rifleman from D Coy 1st Bn, Tower Hamlets' Rifles (9RB) from Mersa Brega to Gazala for his family. I have read the war diaries and official histories I am now looking for anyone who has had any memories passed down of what it was like for the riflemen of the battalion.

Hi there, I'm a newbie so I hope you don't mind this as my first post but you may find the info at this site of some interest. I came across it when trawling the net some years ago to find out about my Granddad who died in Algeria. He was in the Tower Hamlets Rifles between 1938 and 1943, when he was killed in action near Bone in Algeria. I hope it gives you a little more insight into what life was like for him and his chums back then. Thanks and good luck. Glen.

Hi Glen, it sounds like your granddad traveled to North Africa with convoy KMF-04. My dad followed on a few weeks later with KMF-05.

I've included a few first-hand accounts of these 'trips' that you may find of interest here: Sergeant ACK-ACK: Operation Torch convoys

    Good luck with your research.

    Hi Steve
That's a fascinating bit of reading. I say bit, I mean a lot of reading! haha. Great research and I bet a lot of it was very close to what my Gramps saw and experienced in his time around Bone and the rest of Algeria. Thanks for sharing this and I'll pass it on to my own father who never knew his Dad but would be amazed at the convoy element of your Father's story, as my Gramps would have been on the same route etc from the Clyde in the same month.
    Much appreciated.
    Glen.
