RN Service records - Question about the word 'Lent'

A 1940 Able Seaman is shown as 'lent' from HMS Drake to Operation Dynamo, Chatham for a 3 week period from 7-23rd May 1940. He then returns to HMS Drake.

Were Chatham responsible for recording his activity during that 'loan' period or HMS Drake?

I strongly suspect that he was assigned to Operations XD during that period but need to know who to ask to obtain evidence. Any help gratefully received. Philip

 

Odd dates. As far as I am aware planning for Operation Dynamo did not start until 20 May 40 and it was not put into operation until 26 May. The Germans did not attack in northern France until 10 May so at the date you have given for your man being loaned to Chatham, 7 May, there would not have been any contemplation of Dynamo being required. Are the dates you quote those shown on his Service Record and do they actually mention Operation Dynamo?

Thanks Tim. Yes, his P&V ledger says 'Lent: Dynamo Operation, Chatham'. His SR says nothing about that period at all, not even that he was 'lent' anywhere. I agree with you that you cant lend someone to an Operation that doesnt yet exist! I know that he was assigned to Operation XD (M) which was 15/16th June but am certain he was involved in two earlier May operations XD (C) and XD (F). They are mentioned on his SR and one on his P&V but the dates are incorrect and it says he was MPK on XD (F), which he wasn't. Onwards and upwards....Philip

 

All I can suggest is that the P&V ledger/Service Certificate were completed towards the end of May and the Writer misinterpreted XD as Ex Dynamo. Your knowledge on the Operation XD Parties way exceeds mine!
