One of the individuals that I am researching from the Widnes Centotaph, is listed as having served with the 73 medium regiment, Royal Artillery 1940. Weekly News December 13th 1940 - Gunner C. Carter There was abundant evidence of the sympathy felt by many Widnes people with the young wife of Gunner Clarence Carter and the members of the family at the funeral on Thursday afternoon. The deceased serviceman was 23 years of age and the circumstances of his death were exceedingly sad. He had met with an injury and was looking forward to an expected home leave following his recovery, when he lost his life through enemy action. He lived at 25 Vine Street and formerly at 14 Edwin Street. An old boy of Warrington Road School, he was employed before joining the forces at the Pilkington-Sullivan Works of I.C.I. The funeral took place from Vine Street and officers and comrades from the army attended. Prior to the interment in the Borough Cemetery service was held in the St. Ambrose Church where at one time the deceased was a chorister. The Rev. J.H. Bankes (Vicar) officiated and also presided at organ for the singing of the hymn “O God, our Help in ages past.” The coffin was born by Lance Sergeant Donnelan, Gunners Smedley, Lockley, Cotton, Keating (trumpeter) and Peacok and Bombardier Rowe. A firing party at the graveside was composed of Bombardier Waring, Gunners Mathieson, Butterworth, Winder, Finney, Howe and Hadwick.
