I don't have a copy of 59 Medium Regiment war diary, but if you start your own thread, others may have. He was buried at Maasbree, map coordinate 824088, but re-intered at Venrai War Cemetery.

He was a cornet player in the Barrow Labour Band in 1930, and in the following year joined the Steelworks Band. He was also a member of several local dance bands.

The funeral service was held at St. Luke’s Church, the vicar, the Rev. R. B. Bradford officiating. The hymns “Jesu, lover of my soul” and “Abide with me”, were sung.

I've come across this death through some family research. He has a Casualty List entry matching the death year on Find My Past and the Roll of Honour.

Can anything be learned from the service number block? He died on route to hospital in the ambulance near Pitt Street in Glasgow of a heart condition. Seems too old for overseas service prior to death, but who knows. Cheers Maria

    Maria,

His service number came from Royal Artillery (Field, Coastal & Anti-Aircraft) block, so nothing seems to stand out.

Thanks Rob. I was just curious if he had joined as RA originally or guestimates on enlistment time frame.

His CWGC details only came up as a hint on Ancestry today, so I'm at the early stages on this one. Interestingly, his death register entry doesn't mention him being on active service at the time of death.

Could he have been on Home Guard duties in Glasgow or on reserves by March 1946 and his heart condition war related?

That's 3 out of the 4 Devlin sons dying between WW1 & WW2. His brothers Hugh & Michael died overseas in WW1.

Here's his burial entry on 5 March 1946 at St Kentigerns in Glasgow. 26ef9a7a-881a-4989-a9eb-f0c666a55609.jpg

I think the only way for sure is to apply for his service record from the MOD at Glasgow. The £30 fee would apply and in Covid19 times, could be a very long wait.
