Royal Marine William "Billy" DIXON. PO. 4303 Help with Service Record

Discussion in 'Commandos & Royal Marines' started by Stephen William Dixon, Aug 29, 2025.

  1. I wonder if anyone can help me to find any further information regarding my father's service in the Royal Marines.
I have his service record which I can summarise as follows:-

    1. Joined the Royal Marines on the 5th Sept 1939 and trained at Deal Depot passing out on the 16th March 1940 as a member of 364 Kings Squad.

    2. After passing out he was posted to Portsmouth Division, then 336 Heavy Battery, then HBL 90 No 3 C.D.Battery and returned to Portsmouth Division until 30th Sept 1940

    3. 1st Oct 1940 until 6th Jan 1944 he served aboard HMS King George V in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Italy.

    4. 7th Jan 1944 to 22nd August 1944 he returned to Portsmouth Division.

    5. 23rd August 1944 until 6th July 1945 his service record shows him as being administered by "Odyssey".
It is this period I would like to find any further information if possible. My father told me that he became a despatch rider and went to France sometime after D.Day. I know that on the 19th November 1944, he was involved in a Royal Navy Football match played at the Stade Olympique Charenton, Paris.

I would be grateful for any information that may help

    Many thanks

    Steve Dixon

    Stephen,

    Welcome aboard.

A search here did not identify any threads with his details. I'm not sure what PO 4303 is, I expect it is his Service Number.

I did a quick online search with: "Odyssey" + "Royal navy" site:ww2talk.com that id'd a small number of threads. You could change it to Royal Marines. Another search is: "royal marine" + "Odyssey" site:ww2talk.com

I looked through one thread and found:
From: Help identifying a line on war record

To identify what he was actually doing you need to identify his unit (Naval Party or NP followed by a number) and view their War Diary.

There area mass of online sources id'd with: "royal marine" + "Odyssey"
