Royal Navy plastic buttons.

    I have just seen a post elsewhere by a beachcomber /mudlarker referring to RN plastic buttons being painted gold, however when they find them, the paint is worn off (the picture shows a lot). I know little about the RN however do know Army and RAF issue plastic badges tended to be left black (which was the point with the Rifles). My instinct is that they are wrong.

    Can anyone here comment?

    I think your instinct may be right. The RN did use gilded brass buttons and I believe that some makers of reproduction uniforms use gilded plastic buttons to represent these. From 1969 the Soviet Navy did us some gillded plastic buttons. However these were plated not painted
