Hi all Iv'e been going through my fathers items including photos from WW2 & I am getting very confused .As in those days parents never realy mentioned the war so I am looking for information as I wish to depict his image in 1940s events me & my wife attend .In the photos I can see that he was in Tripoli , Egypt , Pakistan & possibly Ceylon & on the 24th March 1944 it looks like a he witnesed a volcanic eruption somewere . I think he joined the Signals in the thirties as depicted by the battle dress he was wearing & it would appear he played hockey , there is also a photo in what I can only describe as a white naval dress suit but it has signals insignia on the collars & hat .I have somewere when I find it a hand writen diary from when he left Liverpool to when he was in North Africa which he has dated somewhat .I do not appear to have his service number or war records & would be grateful of any help I can get . cheers Al

Hi Al and welcome to the forum.

I suspect the volcano eruption maybe in Italy. I think one of our Vets (Mr Ron Goldstein) was there when it erupted.

Can you post the pictures you have of your father?

    Regards
    Andy

Anyone help Alan with Picture No.1

Possibly a 'waiting on' uniform for the Officers Mess?

    Ref Picture No.1

The head-dress looks like a Universal Pattern Forage Cap with a white cover.

Other than the above I can find no mention of the above uniform in 'British Army Uniforms and Insignia of WW2'. I suspect it is a pre war unifrom for somewhere like Hong Kong ?

    It almost looks Royal Marines.

Ref No.2 The Chevrons on the left arm are good conduct badges.

Two stripes indicates a minimum of five years good conduct.

Not sure about the White Lanyard. Current R. Sigs lanyards are Navy Blue and this originates from their affliliation with the Royal Engineers.

Not sure about the shirt or trousers either. The trainers are what I used to call 'white daps' I wonder if he is wearing a PTI's outfit beneath his jacket?

The chap at the back in the Forage Cap looks like he may be wearing 'Hospital Blues' or he could be a steward. Not sure about the civvie or what the others are holding? Bayonets and a shot gun perhaps?

Obviously taken outside a Signals Office somewhere. I believe the chap second from the left and the one on the far right are 'lineman' as they look to be wearing the leather belt still traditionally worn today by them (Assuming the trade still exists).
