Headstone spotted at Askern Cemetery, RSM Charles Kaye of the York & Lancaster Regiment, died on 8 March 1946. No age given on the headstone but the death index says he was 52, so born around 1894. Possibly pre-WW2 service given his age, although that's not necessarily a given (there is one WW2 casualty in this cemetery who is older). I can't find an obvious match in the WW1 records, the 1921 Census and 1939 Register don't indicate any military service although the latter says he was an ARP warden.

Obviously WW2 cases are tricky without easy access to the necessary military records, but posting here in case anyone else can add something.

Assume death cert would give cause which would give you a pointer if worth moving forward

Looked at this one again and decided to get the DC. No apparent military service, cause of death states:

That while working at the Askern Main Colliery he fell from a ladder outside the Fan House and sustained a compound fracture of the right radius and ulna and died from pulmonary embolism resulting therefrom; Accidental death P.M.

Askern is a fair step from Barnsley though.

I hope you can crack this one, and all that land in front of you.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

EDIT: I don't think this chap is one and the same as yours Paul. I can only find reference to him having been a private, no mention of RSM.

Ooh, good spot Jim! I'd already looked at your first man but he seemed to be an older chap. This service record looks bang on though, I can access it on FMP so I'll have a look later. Thanks!
