THE BRITISH ARMY IN NORTH AFRICA, SICILY, ITALY, THE BALKANS AND AUSTRIA 1942-1946
    © IWM NA 14639
    Object description
Original wartime caption: Sgt. J. Hartley - South African Engineers - and Dvr. J. Morris - Royal Signals - walked into "B" Company Scots Guards lines at Castel di Sangro and surprised everybody by saying that they were escaped Prisoners of War. They were dressed in civilian clothing and had been walking through Italy, for the past seven months. They had 'jumped' the train whilst being transferred from Italy to Germany. They have both learned to speak fluent Italian. Sgt.Hartley who has been a prisoner for two years, had made a previous attempt to escape. He was an engineer at Blomfontein, South Africa, before the war. Dvr. Morris who had been a prisoner for three years was an apprentice jockey in France before the war. CQMS Dunford of 36 Compton Road, Hayes. Middlesex, is seen here fitting Dvr.Morris out with new clothing, while Sgt. Hartley looks on.
