Hello I have a scroll to a sapper R. Poulton Royal Engineers, but ive looked on CWGC website and searched the soldiers died ww2 disc but i cannot find him anywhere, wondered if someone could throw some light on to this. Thanks Tony
Hello Tony welcome to the forum Where did you get the item from? Hopefully a forum member who has access to newspapers /Ancestry might be able to shed further light on it
Hi CL1 thanks for the welcome, apparently the scroll came from a house clearance in Birmingham, just seems odd i can't locate him as a casualty cheers Tony
Hello Tony yes I agree I wonder (which is unlikely but not impossible) if the spelling of the name is incorrect regards Clive
just 2 with Poulton SERJEANT HARRY POULTON Service Number: 2216498 Regiment & Unit/Ship Royal Engineers 257 Field Coy. Date of Death Died 24 March 1945 Age 40 years old Buried or commemorated at REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY 53. A. 12. Germany Country of ServiceUnited Kingdom SAPPER JOSEPH WILLIAM POULTON Service Number: 5881408 Regiment & Unit/Ship Royal Engineers 41 Fortress Coy. Date of Death Died 12 September 1944 Age 33 years old Buried or commemorated at SINGAPORE MEMORIAL Column 41. Singapore Country of ServiceUnited Kingdom
Snap, you posted while I was drafting!! Only 2 with surname POULTON in CWGC, only suggestion they got initial wrong and instead of R it should be H. Can see how that could happen with bad writing. Serjeant Harry Poulton | War Casualty Details 2041194 | CWGC From casualty card his wife lived in Altrincham, Cheshire. Casualty list gives rank as W/Sgt and he enlisted as a Sapper on 29/9/1925. Best I can come up with. Nothing of help in online newspapers in the Birmingham area.
ps. Harry was with 257 Field Coy. Anyone here know where they were in March 1945? EDIT. Not sure why I asked that, won't help at all!!!
It would appear the Ministry for Pensions sent out the scrolls https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commo...d61-89d4-ecbc1e97d6c9/WarDead(MemorialScroll) The modern day is DWP,might be worth dropping them a line but possibly never get a reply
Another option: SAPPER RICHARD SAMUEL BOULTON Service Number: 2074564 Regiment & Unit/Ship Royal Engineers 263 Field Coy. Died 18 May 1940 Age 23 years old Buried or commemorated at ABBEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Plot 9. Row A. Grave 12. France Sapper Richard Samuel Boulton | War Casualty Details 2952539 | CWGC EDIT: NOK address given as Sussex, so perhaps unlikely.
Thanks to all for the replies, could well be a miss spelling of the name, i did wonder this. cheers Tony
