Hi, I wonder if anyone would check the National Archives Online files for me. I am trying to identify the diaries for the 80th Anti Tank Rgt, up to the surrender of Singapore. (Feb42) I can find WO172/188 July - Oct 1941, but nothing else. I particularly want the diary that covers the Battle of Jitra Dec 1941. I have my F-in-L , a veteran of this, sitting here with me in anticipation. I was very successful at Kew recently, getting details of his POW camp on Formosa, and would appreciate i/d for the files needed for next visit. (WO172/192 just says Singapore RA Dec 41- Feb 42, could this be it?) Thanks if you can help Mike
I've just searched through the whole of WO 172 and as far as I can see the one you have is the only one. Like Phil says it was most likely captured or destroyed before capture. You best bet would be to look for personal accounts. Citations might help to if any of the Regt were awarded medals for the battle you are interested in. Let me know if you want someone to copy WO 172/188 for you Cheers Andy
Thanks Phil and Andy. Andy, at least I know its not my searching capabilities now, thanks. Thanks for the offer to copy, but I hope to do a return trip within a fortnight. Maybe I will see you again. Mike
Mike, This might be of interest, if you haven't seen it already: WO 361/2103, Prisoners of war, Far East: 80th Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery; nominal roll 1942 Jan 01 - 1945 Dec 31 Lee
Thanks Lee, Yes I already had that one down for next visit. Theres a few in 361: 361/239 80th missing personnel 361/2045 Pow + photos 361/1534 Death certificates 361/1541 Kinkaseki post war report by Major Crossley. Thanks anyway. Always pleased to receive more. Mike
