    Thanks BFBSM,

I can really relate to this story, as some of my Chindit 1 research has enabled families to learn what happened to their loved ones, over the same length of time. :poppy:

Just in case it leads anyone else here who is interested in this story, here are the details on the two men being discussed:

Lance Corporal FAIRY, William Fredrick VX48685 of the 2/29 Australian Infantry Battalion - Date of Death 5 Apr 1944

Private YOUNG, William VX60083 of the 2/29 Australian Infantry Battalion - Date of Discharge 19 Dec 1945 (the nominal roll shows his date of birth as 4 Nov 1921 - his actual date of birth would have been 1926)

PS - Lynette Silver is the researcher who exposed that mongrel who was claiming to be an ex-POW, in spite of the fact that he was a schoolboy in Adelaide during the war years and had never served in the military. He went on to become the president of the ex-POW association in Australia and was being paid the highest ex-service pension by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Thanks to Lynette he ended up in jail for his crimes (not for long enough though).
