Sexual Intercourse in Prisoner of War Camps

Anyone come across this subject before?

I received a couple of pages today related to POW camps and discipline. A list of names is on one page with the offence and sentence and whilst it contains the offences you would suspect like Sabotage or Disobedience most of the names on the list are for an offence of Sexual Intercourse.

I read of one 1940 chap (Buffs I think) who was tricked into having sex with a German girl and then made to join the British Corps as a result for threat of death for rape I think.

Would these offences most likely be with local girls or acts of homosexuality with other PoWs or sexual favours with other guards?

Any thoughts?

I read somewhere but can't recall where that prostitutes where used to get information from certain POWs, by blackmailing them with that that rule. Much in the same way with the guy in the legion of St George.

I have no evidence; however, I would think that, in 1940, any reference to homosexual intercourse would be obvious. I believe that it was illegal in the UK and didn't the Nazis send homosexuals to Concentration camps?

The Pegasus site contains a diary entry about two PoWs being punished for sodomy. I assume it probably went on quite a lot, both due to natural proclivities and the unnatural circumstances virile young men found themselves in.

 

Homosexuals were sent to concentration camps, that's for sure.
Now some of you maylaugh at this.. But it is a fact,that 19 year old men were a great deal younger 70 years ago, than they are today.. .....Seriously....

I had left the army, and was still convalescing.... when I discovered young women. Then I tried my best to catch up for lost time...Big Grin!.
Sadly I have to report that I was still wearing steel caliper (full length)! Virtually anunbendable steel leg.

Now here is a problem for you keen WW2 Buffs. In a romantic? Interlide... At what angle to you stick a steel leg. 45 degrees? Think about it,. Even bigger grin....

There is no doubt that the practice has always take place among males, whether free or incarcerated.Hitler was accused of it while at the front in the German army by members of his company. He may have had his little dog for company but others of the company pointed to his special friend.

Getting back to the Germans,it was an offence against the German state for a German woman to have intercourse with a POW of any nationality.Slavs would be executed of course,being regarded as the untermenchen.Opportunities for POWs to have access to the opposite sex came about from POWs forced to work alongside German female labour,especially on farms when the males were absent due to conscription.Read an amusing case of a British soldier POW in East Prussia who had a dogs life on a farm accomodating the absent farmer's wife.She felt so much for her employee that she equipped him with her husband's suit when he finally did a bunk.

As regards the situation when the Allies poured into Germany in 1945,Ike issued an anti fraternisation order.Some hope of it being adhered to.

 

POW's of the Japanese, never seen anything along these lines.

Of the veterans I have met that ended up prisoners of the Japanese, all said that food became the total focus of their existence and sex (of whatever kind) just wasn't discussed.

One great story from Chindit 1. paraphrasing a bit here:

"eh Fred", says Ernie, "you remember that Dorothy Lamour?"

"Yeah, what about her mate?"

"What would you do to her, if she was here now, in this bloody jungle?"

" I'd put her between two slices of bread and eat her mate!"

 

I suspect that the vast majority of POW sexual activity is covered by Rodney Dangerfield's famous line, " The first time I had sex I was absolutely terrified..............then again, I was all alone".

 

Looking at the sentences of these men that were convicted - They ranged between 9 months to 3 1/2 years. They were sentenced at the back end of 1944 to I doubt any of them served the full term.

Who charged these POWs. Was it the enemy or the POW's own military structure?

Any camp details?.

 

I'll blank the names of the offenders and post the two pages-off the top of my head they were the Germans.

 

I remember when I was in East Timor a Jordanian soldier had to be surgically removed from a goat (don't know if it was a male or female )

Harry, long runs the fox; what happened in the end to Roehm could hardly be called "tolerant" :p

I had a very good friend , who's brother was my best mate in the army .now my
friend who i also worked with was captured at ST.VALERY in 1940 ...he told me
he was working on a farm , and at night he was meeting a german school teacher [ woman ] ..he said if the allies had come to rescue him in 1944 he would not have left . some had a pretty good war ..
