To me, the most remarkable film about the Holocaust is Claude Lansmann's Shoah. It is ten hours in length. I have it on video, recorded from TV a few years ago, which allows me to watch it in "chapters" over two or three weeks, which I have done a couple of times.

For instance, there are clear Chelmno, Treblinka, Birkenau and Warsaw Ghetto chapters in the film, although they are not labelled as such.

Filip Muller, mentioned by Lee on the Eyewitness Auchwitz thread, is one of the survivors interviewed in the film.

I don't know if it has been released on commercial video or DVD, but it should be.

If you ever get the chance to watch it, my advice is to do so.

Timing was nice, Shoah Arrived yesterday and my Wife never told me and then wrapped it for Christmas. So all I need to do is get rid of everyone ASAP today after christmas dinner and I can get my pen and paper out while I watch.

    Cant wait!

    What did you think, Lee?

This might sound perverse, but I actuallt think the filming of locations as they were at the time and the absence of archive material actually increased the impact. certainly did for me anyway.

It was a marvellous docu - I have never forgotten the little Polish boy who used to sing on his way up and down river - and his return to the village after years in Israel.

It has certainly been different so far, and puts a whole new slant of certain aspects, just finished watching the 2nd dvd with two more to go, will post more once I watch it all the way through.

Im always nicely surprised by the impact "Shoah" had and still have outside of France. I Hope that cheaper editions will be avalaible soon though cos 120 £, that is silly.

Its not really that silly, it was a piece that cost an awful lot to put together over many years and production costs for any work such as this are very high. Providing demand is high then the ultimate sale price would be low, however demand for such an item as you would expect would not be as high as other productions hence the £120 price tag.

However they are always available to buy on ebay at a much reduce cost.

I saw a few on there earlier for as little as £30.

Well the thing is price here in France for the box is around 70 euros. Which is far far less expensive than 120 £.
A good solution for European people would be to buy the French edition (check amazon.fr) since subtitles are available in English, Spanish, German.
