You seem to be describing Divisional shoulder flashes see attached.
These Gunners are wearing 1st Infantry Division shoulder flashes.
    Sometimes confused with officers epaulettes.
They are wearing the Grenade cap badge adopted by a number of RA TA units apparently due to a shortage of Gun cap badges in 1939.
They used collar badges instead and stayed with them throughout the war.
Cropped (for clarity) from a photo courtesy of the Shepherd Family collection

RTR units tended to have colours that they wore on their epaulettes to identify themselves - LAD atd 11 Bn RTR has an image of 3 lads from 11 RTR showing their unit flash, is it like these? I have some images but they are to other RTR units - I'm sure I have seen lists of colours online somewhere but can't see it now

Fortunately dbf provided an opportunity for the enquirer to provide more details but they seemed to be either disinterested or simply struggling.
My experience tells me that even a wrong response is worth the effort, as it encourages others who know better, to say so. (90% success rate).
    Thanks AB64
Just need to see if they come back.
In any case there is now information made available for others.
    Merry Christmas!

Excellent winners all round, you can now post pictures on line, you know what they are, others might come up with more photos that he is in and people like myself know what tankies wore on their shoulders.
We all live and learn. Thank you.

Mate 11 RTR’s ‘Strap Tally’ (shoulder flash) was red over black but the flash in the pic looks like the one worn by the 6th - red over yellow!

Having seen other pics the colours might well be black or dark blue over white, l’m away from home at the moment and haven’t got reference to any of my books!

Eureka! Here is the ‘Full Monty’, so to speak! The 11th must have changed their ‘Strap Tally’ colours when they came back to the fore in Jan 41:-

Looks like you cracked it the black and white look like the ones in the photo I have just found out that the photo was taken on the 15th nov 1942 in Tel Aviv so that falls in with what you said about them changing their colours in Jan 41 thanks again for your help
