These photos from the family album are labelled Singapore Base workshop 1949. If anyone has anything to add, I would be grateful.

I've been there, on Peleliu in the '80s. Wildly different from your pictures.

    Interesting—thanks for posting.

What areas are covered by the rest of the album?

Any of Malaya or Hong Kong?

I do have the main 'diaries' for Singapore District HQ 1949 & 1950, and I'm reasonably sure the Base Workshops get a mention, but it might be a bit too rarefied to get into specifics—will check.

And, unfortunately, by March 1950, the paperchain on most FARELF units and formations goes dead.

You may want to pull this diary from the National Archives at Kew:

    Reference: WO 268/729
    Description: Base Workshops Singapore R.E.M.E.
    Date: 1949 Jan.-Dec.

There is no 1950 diary—this is the last in the series.

Thanks, I will take a look if possible.

That’s a shame. I was hoping for a reference to his hospital admission .

There is another Royal Engineers Singapore diary for 1950, I think, but from the series and the title, it's very hard to know what it covers.

I'll dig out the reference code.

I have no idea what this covers, and obviously you only need to consult one part of it, but if you were going to leave no stone unturned, you could take a look.

    Reference: WO 305/1624
Description: HQ Engineer Base Group, Singapore
    Date: 1939-1962 Dec

Unless the hospitalisation was part of a mass illness or accident—or the victim was an officer—it is very unlikely to be recorded in these kinds of unit documentation.
