The russians employed wemon as snipers supposedly because they are more capable of keeping still and calming their nerves in action. However i cant be to sure of this little fact, but it was told to me by a Russian reinactment unit at a local exhibit.
The Red Army had about 800.000 female soldiers in WWII and they served everywhere even as snipers and bomber pilots. And many of the Russian partisans were women, too. The Germans called these women "Flintenweiber" the translation could be something like "shotgun-sluts", a word that expresses in German disdain and fear at the same time.

SS soldiers and fear are two words that cant be put together.. Oh, please! By the way, I love your new avatar. It reminds me old good days of Warsaw Pact - "Together We're Invincible!" :m3:
SS soldiers and fear are two words that cant be put together.. Very true Dani but the SS were in a definite minority on the Eastern Front. Yes there were sizable numbers but in terms of the overall number of Germans in the East it was a small percentage.
Well, there were SS and there were SS... From 6th SS Mountain Division Nord - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia July 1941: July 1: Operation "Silver Fox" - German & Finnish units retake Soviet-occupied Finland and invade Soviet Karelia. SS-Nord assigned to German "Norway Army" with unit strength: 9,505. Assault on Soviet positions at Salla, after 2 attacks in which 5 SS battalions are skewered, the Soviets counterattack. Soldiers of the SS-Nord panic, abandon their weapons and run from the battlefield, suffering 86 killed, 232 wounded and 147 missing. The "Rout at Salla" becomes evidence for Heer officers that racial and ideological paragons do not automatically make good soldiers - only adequate training and preparation does. SS-Nord eventually rallies and participates in the failed drive to interdict the Murmansk railway at Louhi. Also I don't think you could expect much from the masses of "improvised Aryans" Himmler was shangaiing into the SS after mid-war, could you?
I'd like to learn no more info on women deployed in battle on the ground. Any one got any information?
Folks....everybody knows that women make better and more ferocious soldiers than men ever could... Soviet girls have proved this.... In his series of 'faction' novels about his experiances of the infantry fighting on the Eastern Front, Sven Hassel mentions more than once that his unit used to slaughter these girl soldiers out of hand!....WOE betide the German soldier captured by them! If Eastern European women can do it, why can't ours? The answer is obvious....they always could.... WE just haven't let them have a go!
Excellent post sir! Interesting photos. I'm curious though, in the last picture it shows a listening device. Where they any use???
Excellent post sir! Interesting photos. I'm curious though, in the last picture it shows a listening device. Where they any use??? As you can see on this photo ) hehe this is not a hearing device - this a megaphone used to alert about german air-strike .
Excellent portrait. I like the sound locator too, few allied ones here: How Were World War II Searchlights Used?
I love the ads for the sound locators!!! "Ears to the Sky"!!! Like who was their "target" market if you'll pardon the pun?
So Is this a hearing device or alerting device? For me it looks like megaphone, but on link provided by Von Poop it described like hearing device
Some facts about women in Red Army. In first week of war there was 20 000 applications from Moscow women and girls, just after 3 months 8360 of them was joined to army. In number of Leningrad's young members of Komsomol was 27 000 applications from women. Over 5 000 of them was sent to front as they was acknowledged be proper for army. Over 2 000 of them were fought on Leningrad front.
So Is this a hearing device or alerting device? I'd say almost certainly a pre-radar listening/sound location device. If a need was there for a giant megaphone I'm sure they'd use conventional loudspeakers or PA system, and sirens would announce air attack more effectively than any amplified human voice. Cheers, Adam.
Just going off topic a bit, that is 100% a Sound Locator, here are two British examples. A Mobile Sound Locator of the 1st Anti-Aircraft Division, Territorial Army Mobile Display Group, in use at night. A Sound Locator on a tripod mounting in operation with an anti-aircraft battery Back on topic, some good photos there of Soviet women, deadb_tch, thanks.
