Hiya guys, Gettin in a bad way now. Ive got myself a airfix 72nd Stug III Ausf G to make and I have a few questions. Firstly the Ausf G should have a machine gun (bow I assume?) according to wikapedia but if you look at this pic of a G then ist doesnt seem to have one. I am right in saying that the gun in the loader/gunner hatch is a regualr MG42, you make out the Bipod? Two colour schemes I fancy are either Western Desert/Tunisa or Russian front. Would it be accurate to depict them in Afrika Korps colour scheme? Of should it have the earlier low velocity Gun this early in the War? What is the correct colour for a desert version? Did they fight in the Western desert or just Tunisa?? I guess most of the Ausf G long 75mm models went to the Russian Front. If I was to weather it, would be accurate to apply a rough white white wash over the top to depict winter colours. Only doing aircraft before Ive never really done weathering, But I think tanks look silly clean. Not right. The Ausf E look like it went to the long 75mm Gun and the Mantlet? Is the onlt difference between pre E models the gun and mantlet? Its not clear in the instructions but it looks like the kit comes with the short and long gun? Is this right anyone down one of these. Kev
Always the way isnt it, hunt around on the ent looking for info cant find anything. Soon as I post for help i find http://www.wargamer.com/Hosted/Panzer/stug.htm Ausf G and pre E models complelty differnent front barbette shape. The G has less shot traps and deflector plate in front of the commanders station, so using the short gun is out. Ok then it says that the mantlet didnt appear till 44 which rules out North Africa. Des this mean that some pre 44 Ausf G's had the high velocity gun and no mantlet? Basically it looks like this kit is only acciurate for Russian front and France/Normandy. I fancy Russian front. What would be an accurate coloutr scheme? Kev Kev
Kev, Have you finished it yet? If so where's pictures? This chap has made the Airfix kit, Miniature Reviews Sturmgeschutz III Ausf G by Ian Robertson (Tamiya 1/35) Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.G Sd.Kfz.142
Doing a 1:48th Stug.IIIG at the moment, those missing Lynx blokes can just be depressing, shockingly good. Still hoping for some boat and plane builders to 'get their kits out'.
Check out the quality of one of Jaques Littlefield's restorations: Stugtastic, it never looked that good factory fresh. (notice the Protze in the background; nice. He can afford it: MVTF) Good camo inspiration can be found here. Edit: Just read an article on that Littlefield Stug restoration: c. $100,000 dollars for the vehicle... $200,000 on restoration.

This chap has made the Airfix kit, Miniature Reviews Sturmgeschutz III Ausf G by Ian Robertson (Tamiya 1/35) Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.G Sd.Kfz.142 Yea ages ago, it was the first one. I did it Western desert really cos i wanted too, its completly wrong as its got the long 75 gun and the funny shaped mantlet so its 1943-4 onwards. Who cares. Such a good idea the stug. The turret is a bodge up, causes all kinds of problems, its line of weakness, it requires a large secondary power source., it requires balancing often resulting in just wasted weight in the shape of counterweights, really limites the aize of your breach wich is a rela pain when you need a high velocity gun, got all kinds of problems with passing electical power to it, you dont wanna store your rounds up there, theres wasted space inside the tank for clearance for the basket. All this cos the tank cant rotate fast enough, surley its better to sort the problem as source than to treat the symtoms. I blame the French. Long live the Casement tank destroyer!!! (what do you mean its extinct??) Kev
Is this why you blame the French? For inventing the St Chamond? http://www.firstworldwar.com/photos/graphics/cnp_tank_french_01.jpg
