Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum, so a little bit about me first before I ask for your help. I'm Martin, in my early 70s living on the Isle of Wight. I've been researching my family history for many years, and some of my research is published on my website. I'm hoping you can help me with research into my uncle Leslie Charles Webb (1910-1971). He joined the Royal Navy in 1929, and became a submariner in 1931. He remained a submariner until he retired in 1950. In 1945 he was awarded the DSM for service in the far east. The gazette entry lists the names of several submarines that took part in the actions, but it doesn't link the names of the men to particular vessels. Page 5658 | Supplement 37358, 16 November 1945 | Lo... I'm trying to find out which submarine he served on in this period. It's not recorded on his service record. Searching on Forces War Records says he served on HMS Tiptoe. I've asked them where they got that information because it's not in the gazette entry. FWR are unable to say where it came from. (It begs the question of whether we can rely on any of their transcriptions.) I think the answer is probably in the National Archives “ADM 1/30558 Awards to 15 officers and men of HM S/M Tiptoe for services during 3 war patrols in the Far East May-Aug 1945”. Does anyone have a copy of that? Can anyone assist in any other way? Thanks. Martin
You will find all details of Tiptoe’s movements and war patrols here. HMS Tiptoe (P 332) of the Royal Navy - British Submarine of the T class - Allied Warships of WWII - uboat.net This page will give you all the subs attached to the British Pacific Fleet in 1945, which you will then be able to follow up in detail on uboat.net BPF Warships.htm
Thanks Ewen, that's brilliant. I guess I'll need to get a copy of ADM 1/30558 from TNA to confirm whether or not he was on HMS Tiptoe. But if he wasn't those sites will point to other possibilities. Thanks again Martin
If you haven't visited already, I'd recommend going to this site: https://www.rnsubmusfriends.org.uk/ One of the best things about it is you can get access to British and Allied Submarine Operations in World War II by Vice Admiral Sir Arthur Hezlet Index 2 This is the ultimate history of British submarine actions in WW2. It's also searchable so may be of use too.
