April 1940 John heard his first spy story at the beginning of the month. An acquaintance asked if he knew there was a spy in his road: ‘Someone evidently gave him the ‘wire’ because when the police came round he had gone but the tea was still hot in the cup. She expressed surprise when I told her I hadn’t heard about it and said “I shouldn’t have told you, we aren’t supposed to tell secrets.”’ http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site8867/Journals/2010/J10Pg 1-10.pdf
