THE BATTLE OF CAEN: JUNE-JULY 1944

I was fortunate to visit Normandy back in 2019, and during my stay in Caen for two days, walked across dozens of WW2-related locations in the city. In this material, I tell an exhaustingly detailed story of the course of the Battle of Caen in 1944. The first bombardments on D-day, the following weeks of advances toward the city, fighting with the Germans, the consequences of the air raids and artillery-shelling, and finally the post-war rebirth of Caen from the rubbles. Let’s discuss the history of a medieval city, its role in the Second World War and Operation Overlord, and its liberation in June-July 1944. This article is based on more than 50 books, and accompanied by 70+ archival photos and my own ones from the journey to allow then/now comparison.

As always, I would greatly appreciate your feedback on the article. Read books, make journeys, and remember the heroes.
