Back in the early 60's Army Cadets were still wearing Battle Dress with nailed boots. It gave us young lads a sense of power to march in step to the crunch of marching feet, the crash whenever one halted or made a foot drill movement. You just had to get it right, no excuses!
The greatest feeling of euphoria was to march behind a band as we did at camp, in the streets of Ramsey IOM, when the drums and bugles echoed down the street to the sound of marching boots.
Not so easy to sneak up on the "enemy" though. How far could you slide on a smooth hard surface? Concrete floors were great fun.
