Just reading Matthew Parker's book "Monte Cassino" and in it he his highly complimentary towards the French Units, especially Juin's Corps at the Gustav Line. Was this the case with the 1944 French Army in general or were these the exception?

Well, their race for Paris wasn´t exactly a walk in the park, and the 2nd Armored, Leclerc in front, punched through, 88´s and all. Afterwards, the steamroller just kept going, fulfilled at Strasbourg the Koufra Oath, and ended up capturing Berchtesgaden in sterling fashion.
There is quite a lot of good information to the formation and battle of the FEC on the attached Hobby

A large percentage of the French Colonials were mountain fighters from North Africa and were ideal for the conditions encountered in Italy. However their treatment of the local poulation especially the females was a sad reflection on the French Army. I found the book a good read and gives a good acount of the terrible conditions the battles were fought under. Regards Tom
