The Hiroshima Files - Slide Show - NYTimes.com "The 'Little Boy' that devastated Hiroshima in 1945 altered the Earth’s axis, while also (albeit briefly) changing the way war would be waged. It virtually leveled an entire city — the scope of which is only hinted at in these dramatic photographs — and, followed a week later by a second, smaller detonation on Nagasaki, did what determined American military bombing was unable to do: it forced a Japanese surrender." Photos of Pearl Harbor and Hickam after the Attack on 12/7/1941. There would not have been a need for the bombs if these bombs were not dropped first.
I have quite a few pics of Hiroshima and Nagasaki taken by my Grandad in late '45 early 46 when he was sent there with the RE. I'll have to get round to scanning them and post in the gallery.
Come on, what are a few tons of bombs and a dozen torpedos between friends? The awakening of a sleeping giant....and filling him with a bodacious case of the @$$....
A new movie called "Midnight Sun" is being made about the development of the Atomic Bomb in New Mexico. Midnight Sun (2011) - IMDb
I don't think the jingoistic American replies to this thread are in good taste when discussing the horrors of atomic explosion. I say this in all seriousness.
I don't think the jingoistic American replies to this thread are in good taste when discussing the horrors of atomic explosion. I say this in all seriousness. Please feel free to alert the admin if good taste line has been jingoistically breached. There's another thread that covers all this called "did the Japanese deserve the bomb" or something like that. Peruse that a bit for some background. Lots of jingoism and graphic discussion there. Also, look at some pictures of Allied POWs that were liberated at war's end, and take some time to brush up on "The Rape of Nanking" for starters. War is indeed hell, and to put it simple, what goes around comes around. Japan rolled the dice, and crapped out. Too bad. If they didn't want a boot shoved up their a$$ maybe they should've thought twice about bombing Pearl Harbor. And to finish, I'll refer back to my original post....they started it.
