Anyone know if any of these engines still exist?

Caterpillar diesel radial. I think I read somewhere that Buda built some radial diesels for Shermans too.

    Not the Sherman.

But Buda built the Guiberson T-1020 diesel engine that went into 1496 M3 & M3A1 Diesel Stuart II/IV light tank.

Don't know if this one has been posted before, but it sure is cool.

Captured gear including those two, here, Bobby:

Think the Firefly is identified, but haven't re-read. The Stug is in Italy if memory serves.

This puts things into perspective a bit.

Comparative Heights (authority is B.T. White, Tanks and Other AFVs of WWII, 1983 US edition)

    M4 Sherman: 9 ft

Pz Kw VI Tiger I: 9 ft 5 in
Pz Kw VI Tiger II: 10 ft 2 in
Pz Kw V Panther: 9 ft 10 in
Pz Kw IVH: 8 ft 10 in
    Pz Kw IIIL-M: 8 ft 3 in

    M26 Pershing: 9 ft 3 in
    M3 Lee: 10 ft

    T34/76: 8 ft
    T34/85: 7 ft 10 in
    KV: 10 ft 8 in
JS II: 8 ft 11 in

    Comet: 8 ft 9 in
    Challenger: 8 ft 9 in
    Cromwell: 8 ft 2 in
Crusader III: 7 ft 4 in
    Churchill III-VII: 9 ft
    Ram: 8 ft 9 in

Chamberlain and Ellis, British and American Tanks of WWII, tend to give greater heights. Neither they nor White explain their measuring criteria. At any rate, from this it appears to me that the Sherman was not an exceptionally tall vehicle. As a group, late war German tanks tended to be the tallest while British cruisers were among the lowest.

    T34/85 lower than a T34/76?

It was not a high profile tank, either.

Might as well do this again.
    Been a while:

The 'too tall' argument's been done to death.
And given perhaps its busiest hour in Normandy, might a somewhat higher viewpoint be seen as an advantage?
The squat Stugs & Jagdpanzers were lurking low in defence. The M4s were attacking over thick terrain.

They all might look very similar in height from 100 yards away.

I didn't say it was TOO tall!

I think that it was just the right height....

    Well, that's what White has.

Yes the T-34 makes my tank designer scream. Look at that restricted turret ring width, look at how much wasted space there is.

Side note: the Ram was successfully made shorter than the Lee and was still shorter than the Sherman when that tank went into production but here's the secret catch: the turret interior at least was cramped, because of the smaller turret ring. I think the "fightability" of the Sherman was better. So in that sense - yes, the right size!
