Not before long Bulgaria was part of the Soviet Union and i aweys wanted to be a Soviet Soldier this was like a dream to me.

I will cast you as a Category A Regimental Tank Comander Extra when I film Red Storm Rising:D

The Russian Soldier was much warmer than his German foe because of his clothing. This allowed him to fight harder in harsh conditions. The Russians used gasoline in their oil to allow lubrication in lower temperatures so their small arms worked when the Germans's jammed.

sorry, I need to narrow my interest only on 1938-1945...
Otherwise I'm overweighted with info... :(

No need to apologise for such a narrow interest![IMG]

What were the main Soviet gallantry awards?
Any citations for them available in English.
Just wondered what the Soviet equivalent of the VC or MoH was?
    Any multiple winners?

The most honorable awards among Soviet soldiers for bravery was medal "Za Otvagu" ("For Bravery") and Order of "Slava" (Glory)

There were Orders and Medals for every occasion you wish. This is a nice site from a collector's standpoint.

The Soviet Military Awards Page. Medals, History and Russia!

The most magnificent decoration is one you won't find in ebay. The Order of Victory, 18 made, awarded to the great Marshals, twice to Stalin himself, Zhukov and Vasilevsky.

It was also awarded to a few foreign recipients for political reasons but in my humble view the list detracts somewhat from the glory. Eisenhower is alright, I guess, but how about Monty, Tito, Rola-Zimiersky and King Mihai of Romania?

It was also awarded to that clown Brezhnev (by himself - 1978) but revoked by Yeltsin, who also removed his 4 (or 5?) Hero of the Soviet Union Stars!

Marshal Rokossovsky's tunic with the O.V. in evidence.

After the death of the recipients, the Orders were to be returned to the State Diamond Fund, same as with the Stars of Marshals of the SU. At least Eisenhower's Order is in his Presidential library with all his awards.

Being a brave, loyal and decorated soldier didn't save a man from a trip to the Gulag.
Just read about Alesky Badmaev, a private in 302nd Division, 51st Army who had recieved a medal for valour and was also wounded. He and his un-named school friend [who had been made a hero of he Soviet Union] were sent to a labour camp in the Urals. Their crime? Being ethnic Kalmyk, that is all.
