Episode 1, Time Commanders - BBC Four

I thought it was much better than I expected and the Wrestlers really ought to have won - (they woz robbed) if they had not just thrown away their elephants at the start of the main battle - in what was evidently an historically accurate first charge.

I think an actual total war player would probably have mopped up the slingers far more easily with cav (rather than allowing their horses to sit static under-fire) and harbored their elephant units a bit more until their opposition had depleted their ranged units / throwing spears - as it's a bit harder to off an elephant with a short sword than it is with a pilum I guess

I suspect however that the "computer controllers" - i.e. those taking instructions from the "general" through the "captains" - and therefore actually "playing the game" are told to do "the daft" thing when not instructed otherwise as it looks "better on the screen"

I imagine that they will get another series after this, unless the next two episodes are really pants.

Hope that they are good too, especially the next one, tomorrow (Monday) on Waterloo.

Around 10 years on...

Looking via google most of what is, I guess, similar appears almost exclusively on youtube.

Finding good historians talking about ancient and modern battles and enthusiasts trying to be arm-chair generals and tactical commanders etc. and often coming unstuck.

It's hard to tell though whether youtubers are suggested because of the general popularity of such.

Rather like the sort of thing one would expect.

Although "historical" in basis, not history as such and with far more of an emphasis on entertainment and action, rather than lessons and learning from war gaming.
