Tom's SdKfz 251 now has a 2.8 cm Panzerbuchse.

For those who have visited my profile page, you will be familiar with my 1/6 scale DID SdKfz 251.

Ever since seeing a picture of a SdKfz 251 fitted with a Taperbore 2.8 cm Panzsrbuchse I wondered if I could install my model cannon.

After toying with the idea I had to look around my odd bits and pieces box to make a fitting to hold the gun on the decking of the halftrack roof.

After much searching I decided an old bicycle pump adaptor was suitable with a little redrilling and filing to cut the height down.

I duly drilled out the adapter and made a small washer to fit inside the underside of the adaptor in order to screw the cannon trunnion to the decking and enable it to traverse.

I took several photographs at stages to show you the progress.

It would have meant a lot of work to try and install the front shield as it interferes with the decking.

The actual installation on the real thing deleted the front shield also and so this was no hardship.

I am a little biased, but to me it appears a good modification and enhanced the forward firepower instead of the usual MG 34 or 42.

    Hope you like this modification.

I can soon exchange it back. :D

    Regards
    Tom

    Tom,
You obviously have too much money to spend on toys.

Tom, I believe you made a typo. There are two legitimate scales, 1:300 and 1:76.

1:6 is at most, at the very most, a subset of 1:76, but anyway...

(nice work by the way, but dont't tell anyone I said this!)

    Miguel,

Anything under 1/35 scale and I would be struggling with close up work, even with glasses.:D

Was that gun scratch-built by you or is there a kit for it? I don't know anything about this scale other than I once saw a PaK38 kit on sale all made-up and painted.

    Miguel,

The gun was, I believe manufactured as a special edition at first by Dragon in Dreams (DID).

It proved popular and quite a few were produced out of metal. Working Breach etc.

My version is the airborne and gebirgsjäger lightweight version and the normal version with large road wheels was also available.

I have made the 3.7 Pak and it looks well, again with working Breach mechanism.

    Looking great Tom!
But I was wondering about the license plate - shouldn't that be SS instead of Wehrmacht?

The Waffen-SS commandeered it from a Heer unit.

Or maybe they just stole it.

Damned thieving SS! The helmet on the side on photo no.5 has a Luftwaffe eagle decal!

There is a real mixture and therefore it is a little battle group or "Kampf Gruppe" which did occur.

    It adds a little variety.

Nice one Tom. At least this type of thing keeps you out of mischief, I'm sure!

    Ger,

Yes, it helps to keep my sanity at times and it is nice to sometimes be alone in the workshop tinkering!;)

I had an idea about refitting the front shield and tried it out this morning.

By using a second screw ring on the adaptor I was able to jack up the height of the mount and it was sufficient to enable the front shield to return for extra protection.

See what you think of the difference between the two.:)

It looks too clean, take it out in the countryside & take photos in a realistic setting.

So what if you attract strange looks from the passers by, you're an eccentric Englishman in Berlin.

Smudger, I originally agreed with Owen - too much time/money but after seeing your excellent pictures I have to admit that is a superb model - respect mate.

Provided he doesn't do a Harry Lime and starts selling diluted penicillin in the black market. Oh, bugger, that was Vienna, not Berlin!

I wish to make some 1/6 scale ammunition containers for the 2.8 cm Panzerbuchse and cannot find any references.

Can anyone provide a link to diagrams with sizes, photos etc.

I suspect that they may be similar to the 3.7 cm Metal ammo cases, but would like a real reference.
