Not WW2 but I am posting here just on the outside chance somebody might know of this incident .
I have all info about incident but need to know what what JD Turney was doing there, I have posted this on RMP. FB page but am trying all angles

In Germany 1968 a 4 tonner driving to airfield with troops from 10th Bn. Parachute Regiment returning to UK from Camp was struck by an express train on a level crossing.
There were 20 troops onboard including the Battalion RSM.
3 men were killed and all others seriously injured.
2 men from 10 Para were killed.
The other was an RMP.(No rank) J D Turney from 44 Para .Bde Para Provost 1.Section.
A memorial is being raised remembering all 10 Para members killed on duty between 1947 and 1999.
Does anybody Know of him ,? was he completing a Camp with 10 Para? Or just getting a lift?
If he was serving. if only attached for Camp. his name will go on the memorial .
If he is eligible we would also like to find his family .
    Bryan Burnikell Ex 10 Para

    Hi Redtop,

There were four men killed in the accident. The other fatality was Driver DL Plowman RCT (12 Sqn, 1 Div Regt, BAOR), the driver of the vehicle who was a regular soldier stationed in Germany and supporting the exercise. The following is an extract from The Waggoner (The RCT Journal) in 1969 - 'It is with sorrow that we report the tragic death of Dvr Plowman whose vehicle collided with a goods train at an unmanned and unlit level crossing, at night and in fog. Dvr Plowman was buried with full military honours at The British Military Cemetery, Hannover...Dvr Plowman leaves behind a widow and two children.'

    Hi Bruneval
    Thanks for that.
It is a rather prickly problem..
L/Cpl Turney we believe was attached to 10 Para for Camp so means he was serving with them at time ,whereas Driver Plowman was part of a Unit tasked to move the Battalion.
The Memorial is not just to mark accident.
Two other names that will be on memorial were killed when a Hastings crashed and some want the RAF PJI's who were also killed included.
    Where do you stop?.
This will be decided by others of a higher pay grade than me.

    Hi Redtop,

Completely agree with your comment on where do you stop. My post was just to add a bit more detail to the incident rather than have his name added to the memorial.

    Regards

    Bruneval (Ex 2 PARA).
